HackCMU 2021 is scheduled for October 1-2 with all activities in-person (Rashid auditorium)! Note that this event is open to CMU students only! If your attendance has not been confirmed through the HackCMU site, your submission will not be judged. Try to submit as soon as possible (submissions can be modified up until the deadline) to avoid any last minute difficulties. Schedule details are listed on the HackCMU site. Happy hacking!

Tech talks and tutorials TBA!

Requirements

Make sure to create a video demo that's at most 90 seconds!

Suggested video outline:
15 - 20 sec -- Discuss the problem and how your project solves it
35 - 60 sec -- Explain how you made the project and how it works. (Get into the technical details!)
10 - 15 sec -- Demo/Walk through of how a user would use your project
5- 10 sec (optional) -- future extensions/applications of your project

Additional Tips for video submission:
- Make sure to clearly explain both your idea and what you actually implemented during the hackathon
- Making a slideshow and talking over it is a good approach. You can make a zoom meeting and just record the meeting while sharing screen!
- Be as direct as possible-- don't be vague and fluffy to make your project "seem" more cool.
- Talk about what APIs, tools, frameworks, language, backend, etc you used
- Explain how your project works. It's ok if you didn't get it fully working! Feel free to talk about how you could improve upon the project in the future
- Add a demo of your project working if you can!

Judging Criteria

  • Originality
Is the hack more than just another generic social/mobile/local app? Does it do something entirely novel, or at least take a fresh approach to an old problem?
  • Technical Difficulty
Is the hack technically interesting or difficult? Is it just some lipstick on an API or were there real technical challenges to surmount?
  • Demo Quality
Is your demo video clear, understandable, and under 90 seconds? Can we understand what you did and why? Does the demo work? Does your project show care and polish?
  • Usefulness
Is the hack practical? Is it something people would actually use? Does it fulfill a real need people have?
